Honda is teaming up with a tech company like Sony to create a new brand of electric vehicles. In fact, the world may find out in the not-so-distant future. The two industry giants have announced today that will work together to jointly develop and then sell new electric vehicles.
Honda and Sony – Create New Company Within a Year
The new company has yet to be named–Sonda or Hony mashups have immediately come to mind. Yet, the business plan is for it to handle the design, development, planning, and sales aspects. However, Honda will be charging with manufacturing the vehicles using its facilities. Sony, however, is said to be responsible for building the platform for the mobility service.
Then last year, Honda said it was committing to only selling battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles by 2040. There will be a gradual increase in those types of vehicles. It would come over the next two decades. Moreover, it would coincide with the declining production and the elimination of the automaker’s internal-combustion offerings.
The first two of the brand’s new EV models– that was creating in a partnership with GM and then not part of the Sony team-up are therefore expecting to arrive on our shores which would start in 2024. One is the Honda Prologue and the other is part of Acura’s premium lineup.
Moreover, while Honda and Sony are really still in the process of negotiating the details of such a partnership. The companies said in a joint statement there is a goal to create a new company within the year. In fact, there is an ambitious plan which is said to include selling the newly formed brand’s first EV model by 2025. There are further plans to commercialize and then provide mobility services.
Sony had its Vision-S 02 prototype electric cross from the CES technology show that is on display. Moreover, an earlier Vision-S 01 electric sedan already has indicating Sony’s intention to enter the EV market in really some capacity.
