A recent survey conducted by Forbes Advisor and published by USA Today has shed light on the driving habits across the United States, revealing that Oregon ranks as the second worst state for drivers. This analysis examined nineteen different metrics to determine each state’s ranking, ultimately placing Oregon near the bottom due to several concerning behaviors. Among the key factors contributing to this designation are a high number of red lights run, frequent refusals to yield, and alarming rates of speeding through school zones. Oregon also shares the haunting honor of being tied with Alabama, Massachusetts, and New Jersey for the number of drivers involved in accidents.
While Oregon’s driving record is troubling, it is Hawaii that takes the crown as the state with the worst drivers overall.
Despite its stunning scenery, Hawaii was noted for its significant issues with running red lights, neglecting turn signals, unsafe lane changes, and driving at speeds exceeding the limit by over 20 miles per hour. On the flip side, the states recognized for having the best drivers include Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.
Interestingly, the survey revealed that road rage is a pervasive problem across the nation, with Oregon standing out as one of the ruder states in terms of driving behavior.
Analysts highlighted a disturbing trend of distracted driving in Oregon, with many drivers reportedly engaging in activities such as texting, eating, and even applying makeup while behind the wheel. Residents expressed their frustrations regarding various road-related issues, citing “slowpokes in the fast lane” and the tendency for drivers to aggressively honk or ‘give the finger” without provocation.
Reports indicate that impatient drivers in Oregon often react aggressively to others, particularly in the left lane.
An example of this is when slower vehicles are traveling at about 50 miles per hour and receive rude gestures when others attempt to pass. Merging, even when executed safely, can trigger similar reactions, further illustrating the tense atmosphere on Oregon’s roadways. In fact, many drivers in the state describe their driving experiences as akin to navigating a “warzone,” highlighting the high levels of frustration and impatience prevalent on the roads.
